Back in the Studio.

After a very long break working on the book illustrations (Ooo, he’s had a break; alright for some!) I’m back in the studio again. I’m working on three unfinished paintings from late last year, foremost amongst them the large Fountains Abbey work. I have the feeling that the whole thing is about to be repainted and that whatever I am doing now is really under-painting. The abbey itself was brought to a conclusion far too early and now admonishes and goads me for my weakness in allowing it to remain extant. It’s as if the monks are grinning at me through the empty windows, thumbs in ears, fingers waggling and tongues out (just you wait boys: I’ll show you who’s the abbot around here!).

'Kate's Field II' - A Picture Develops. Sat 4th April

The canvas had a portrait on it so first job - obliteration!

I like to work in a neat and tidy way - everything in its place and a place for everything.
Underpainting gives weight, depth and texture to the work.
Later I may play God and add sunshine; this is, after all, Kate's field - or.......I may not!

The surface now needs time to dry a little; this will take until Tues' a.m. ...a little longer for the foreground areas containing Lamp Black which has a heavier concentration of linseed oil.

Mon 20th April

Finaly back to Kate's painting and after a shaky start the sun goes in!

Through the looking glass:Tues 21st April

I,ve been for another walk by the river to Kate's field this morning just to clarify it all, and now the painting begins to really take shape.

Now is the time to leave the painting alone for a while: it may be finished but only a little time and distance will tell.

It's for you Kate XX

It's getting to the time of year when my thoughts turn to Scotland. Perhaps April on Mull.
