That London

Just back from London where I did in the end visit Tate Modern. I haven’t been there for a couple of years mainly because I don’t much like the place: the vast turbine hall is simply that – a huge volume stripped of its industrial past. I’ve heard it described as being like a cathedral but it is not. Entering the old Rothko room at what is now Tate Britain did have something of the sense of a cathedral like space – heavy silence, a dominating presence, but this place just feels empty, the art – alive and communicative - hived off into boxes on its periphery. The most apparent space other than the turbine hall itself being the shop and this, it seems, is the only place most people stand still long enough to allow a thought to form.

Turbine Hall, Tate Modern.Where I did find life and inspiration however is at the wonderful Borough Market - one of London's many hidden gems.
